Baby News!

there's been a lot happening around here the last few months so i have a bunch of stuff to blog... some weddings, fun purchases from flea markets + craft fairs and a couple crave shoots.

but the big news is that we're having a baby! we found out in february and life hasn't been the same. in a good way of course. we kept the good news from our family and friends until we got to 12 weeks. it was nice to have that time for ourselves to process the whole life changing experience we're about to have. there were plenty of times i just wanted to blurt it out but somehow controlled myself. i thought for sure my mom would just know by looking at me, like it was written all over my face. by the time we shared the good news everyone was so excited for us!

so far things have been super. i didn't get any morning sickness and no crazy cravings, the only thing was that i wanted to tap naps. every. afternoon. the sleepy part has gone away but i still don't have that BURST of energy like they say you should have in the second trimester. i can't believe that as of last week we're already half way there (due date is mid october). and to top it off we found out we'll be having... a GIRL! we thought for sure we'd hold out and not find out the sex, you know, the ultimate surprise. however, as the days got closer to the ultrasound appointment we decided we had to know. seeing her on the monitor during the ultrasound was a trip! her little legs were kicking around and arms moving... she was pretty active. i still haven't felt her moving around but i'm sure that won't be too far away.

as for business stuff... my last wedding is in august then i'll be taking time off. i've started to get inquires for weddings in 2010 as well so let's talk if you're interested! if you want to book a lifestyle portrait session before end of august send an email.

so much personality and fun to hang out with. the spot at fort baker offered up some cool locations with the golden gate bridge in one spot and old bunkers in another all surrounded by nature.

i fell behind in blogging before the new year and didn't post some great weddings we shot. in the weeks to come i'll be sharing some of the images on the blog.

back in october i went to walnut grove for omar + nancy's beautiful backyard wedding. the wedding took place on her grandmother's wonderful estate with so much greenery and lovely flowers. the ceremony took place later in the day so the light was dreamy and the colors beautiful.

i hadn't met the couple before the big day since they lived on the east coast. nancy was recommended to me from her dad who was a guest at liza + matt's wedding earlier in the year. they were a sweet couple and it was a joy to work with them both. i loved so many of the elements they had at their wedding including the family style salad tossing and the band rowdy kate kept people dancing all night.

i drove to sacramento to meet with my cousin kelly and her fiance john for their engagement session. we started at a park near her house to include some shots with bogie the english bulldog. after hitting the park we went to old sac for more pictures... it was a fun afternoon hanging out with them both. i'm bummed that we won't be going to their wedding since we'll be shooting one that day. i'll look forward to seeing their photos after the big day!

we had a blast this year at WPPI in las vegas. there were so many platform speakers to check out, lots of vendors at the trade show and awesome parties. it was good to hang out with some old friends and meet many new ones.

we didn't bust out any cameras until we got the fuji instax camera... thanks to jonathan for raffling one at the fuji booth during his presentation.

in a few weeks alec and i are leaving for las vegas to attend wppi. last year i went solo and only stayed for a few days which were jammed packed. i had a great time meeting tons of other photographers, playing a poker tournament hosted by becker, attending a party by the cool chicks at photolovecat, playing roulette and squeezing in time to hear some speakers. it was a whirlwind. and i can't wait to do it again this year!

this was such a fun engagement shoot to kick off the 2009 season!

we met with chris + micaela last week at fisherman's wharf for the shoot. the wharf offered a bunch of cool locations off the main strip plus we could duck into the musee mechanique for some photobooth action and we could get some of the beach at aquatic park. thankfully the rain stayed away that day and the sun even made a quick appearance.

i can't wait for their wedding at the brazilian room in march!

happy new year! wow... we're in 2009.

the two weeks around the holidays were a whirlwind. i'm finally recovering from parties, family get togethers, getting orders out the door and wrapping up '08. i hope to catch up blogging weddings from last year, the workshop, some near gear and lots of photos.

last year i wrote down some goals and it was good to look back at that list... seeing what was accomplished and what's staying on the list for this year. i do have some "resolutions" this year but the big one is to exercise more. another big one was getting organized. with lots of motivation and help from julia we did a bunch of organizing and redecorating at our home. we barely got to the office before we had to put a hold on things for the holidays but i'm looking forward to starting back up.

my favorite room so far is the craft room! we have a back closet room that slowly turned into a place where the hamper lived, we stored our bikes, an overflow of clothes/coats we didn't wear and other random storage. this was the room that started the whole process, julia had the idea of converting it to be something more useful of a space and it became the craft room. a place where i could keep all my crafty stuff in one place and be easily accessible. i love that i can keep the sewing machine out and use it whenever i want and i love glancing over to see lots of fabric ready to be used. the first project was sewing some curtains for the room. i'm looking forward to spending more time in this room in the new year!

sunday we met up with the santana family for a lifestyle shoot at the golden gate fields race track. it was pretty laid back shooting in between races and taking advantage of the $1 sunday. i won $58.20 on the first race hitting my trifecta! the rest of the betting that day was on the house... can't beat that.

Clean Up!

we've been doing a bit of cleaning and de-cluttering at our place. it seems that the more space and closets we have the more we tend to fill it up. my friend julia prompted this big project and has been a huge help! alec gave the ok but he needed to go through his stuff on his own and he's been good about purging junk.

by the end of sunday we've made major progress! in the past week or so we've filled a HUGE bag full of old paperwork to take to the shredding company, made a couple drop offs to salvation army and got everything organized into clear bins. plus we're doing a little bit of feng shui too so i've sold stuff on craigslist. it feels great to be free of all the clutter, old bills and junk!

it makes it easier to have someone there with you to really make some decisions... julia has been pretty good with enforcing the "keep or toss" flow of things. i've watched plenty of clean house and it's a lot harder than i thought to get rid of stuff.

here's just a small stack of bins with things all organized and labeled before going into the closet. the "before" picture would just give you a headache. stay tuned for more before/after photos as we start to paint and decorate.

nancy + omar's wedding on saturday took place in the backyard of her grandma's home near the delta. it was a beautiful day...

wow... this wedding was a big party! fig + marisol held their ceremony and the party reception at the swedish american hall which is right on market street. they were on a stage for the ceremony and it had a show feel to it. marisol's brother officiated the ceremony and it was heartfelt, funny and sweet. i've never been to a wedding with so much audience participation... it was awesome!

their wedding was definitely infused with their styles! marisol's outfit was amazing... i'd never seen something like it. the whole outfit was custom made by dark garden. if you know fig you know that he's into sewing his own fashions which often includes crafting with camouflage. you could say that camouflage is their "team" color! the scissor cuff links were a gift to him from marisol, it was perfect.

alec and i had a fun time shooting the wedding and meeting their families and more of their friends. and i have to give a special thanks to alec for capturing some hot shots of the guys getting ready while i was with the girls!

we've been friends with evan + nicole for some time. evan and i first met back in college, then we worked at the same company for a bit then they became our neighbors. earlier in the year they made the move to san rafael and started a family. i was so happy to get a few maternity photos and then finally meet little baby nolan! such a cute baby!

missy + ginna were married in august and had a sweet wedding. the ceremony was held at their church holy innocents followed by an afternoon reception at the trocadero house in stern grove. the day went smoothly and i love the laid back fun vibe. it helped that leslie campbell was there to make sure things were on schedule and went smoothly.

the cake and lunch buffet was done by liberty cafe which was delicious. missy + ginna used bambu biodegrable table ware which was such a fantastic idea!

i had the pleasure of attending a workshop hosted by gene higa + jose villa in san francisco which was awesome. they're both extremely knowledgeable and i liked that they're styles were so different. the first part of the day was them talking about their businesses and later that afternoon we got to watch them both in action working with the models. tyria and caroline both looked stunning and were a pleasure to work with. i met some cool photographers there too... it was a great day all around.

Two Years!

today alec and i celebrate our two year anniversary. it's crazy to think how time flies but the wedding seems like it was just last week. we've had so much fun this past year and i love it. i love him!

tonight we walked over to clementine for an amazing, delicious dinner and shared a tasty bottle of wine. and these are the cute purple tulips he brought home. so sweet!

Melissa + Josh | Wedding

melissa + josh's wedding over fourth of july was just awesome! the ceremony and reception took place at the beautiful hakone gardens in saratoga. most of their family and friends traveled from many places to celebrate their wedding. the ceremony was touching with sweet vows, a couple readings, a song by josh's daughter and rings for the girls.

everything was beautiful from the ceremony to the heartfelt speeches, amazing flowers, super cute cake, fancy dancing (melissa is a dancer) and the 2 wedding dresses. there was a snafu with her dress... it was supposed to arrive via fedex but somehow got re-routed to some other state! a couple of days before the wedding it looked like the dress wasn't going to make it so they needed a back up dress. somehow they found someone in saratoga who just had her niece's dress returned from the cleaners and it fit! finally her dress did show up about 4 hours before the wedding so then she had two. seriously, both dresses were gorgeous... i had to ask which one was the "backup". she changed into the "backup" for her dances. it all worked out. melissa is such a fun, outgoing person bursting with energy and josh is very laid back, it was a pleasure to work with them both.

there's some interesting history as to how melissa found me. she was referred to me by michael clemens and when she went to my site she thought i looked familiar. she called me right away from st. louis saying that she might know me from sacramento or san francisco but couldn't place it. we talked on the phone for awhile and figured that we must've either played soccer together or swam for the same team (we both grew up in sacramento). once i saw a picture of her i knew she looked familiar too but still didn't know how we knew each other. by the time the wedding came around we figured it must've been soccer but not sure what team. wow, such a small world!

The Boardwalk

after melissa + josh's bbq in saratoga alec and i headed to santa cruz for the 4th of july night. of course it was packed with people and kids running around everywhere. we had all intentions of riding some rides but the lines were too long. instead we had some beers, played carnival games and watched fireworks on the beach. it was a fun night.

liza and matt celebrated their wedding weekend at the wellspring renewal center in philo, ca. the location was very cool with lots of little cabins, camp sites and a beautiful garden not to mention all the scenery surrounding the area. i was told that the few days leading up to their wedding the air quality was pretty hazy from all the fires but slowly cleared up by saturday.

for the ceremony the guests followed matt down a path to the river and waited. liza came down with her parents and had her twin niece and nephew leading the way. the river setting for the ceremony was so calm and picturesque! right after they were married everyone crossed the little bridge and joined in for a big champagne toast.

the reception theme was bees with splashes of yellow and pretty sunflowers. back home in berkeley they have a bee farm at their house so it made sense. they even had honeycombs from their bees as favors for their guests... how cool! their laid back wedding was very reflective of how easy going they are as a couple.

Thursday Shenanigans

last night was one of those nights that turned out to be pretty cool. it started off with meeting up with other photographers for some mingling with becker at medjool for happy hour. it's always fun to meet other crafty photographers to talk shop and meet new people. it was pretty laid back and good fun.

afterwards i met up with a friend in the upper haight for a drink. then it was off to meet up with another friend who was down the street at the FTC skatebook release party. the books were pretty hefty filled with tons of fresh photos and the quality of the book was excellent. alec had other stuff to do so he couldn't make so he asked me to pick up a book for him. lots of his friends were there so it was fun to hang out. once the shop closed it was down the street to milk for the after party.

i had my point & shoot with me and snapped a few photos. the guys below were cracking me up. i gave the camera to thorin so he could take some shots with his boys but these are the ones i got. here's the serious and smiling faces.

Elise + Kevin | Wedding

last week elise and kevin got married in the beautiful coastal town of big sur at the henry miller library. they live in a small town in alaska so big sur was a destination wedding and they spent the week leading up to the wedding hanging out with their family and friends enjoying all the beauty in big sur.

alec and i had such a fun time meeting everyone at the rehearsal dinner on friday night held at ventana inn which was amazing... good food and fun people! we stayed at the big sur river inn and the following day we had to ourselves to hang out. we had a lazy, wonderful day having lunch and walking along pfeiffer beach.

the wedding later that afternoon was a fun celebration. elise and kevin had perma smiles all day and just glowed with happiness. immediately after the ceremony as they reached the end of the aisle they went right to dancing... it was awesome! all the music was done by a funky blues grass band harmony grits. towards the end of the night they did the best hustle i'd ever seen!

we hung out with my nephew a few weeks ago. when he comes to san francisco all he talks about is taking the bus to the beach but it was too cold for the ocean. next time. instead we went to the park near our place and he had fun running around with all the other kids. leaving the playground he bombed the little hill in his hot wheel... it was so funny!

we're heading to big sur this weekend for a wedding... it sounds like a fun one!

Liza + Matt | Engaged

i met up with liza and matt to shoot around berkeley for their engagement session. we didn't have anything really planned out other than to meet near the "eternal" house. the weather was a tad overcast, a little chilly and windy but it did make for some nice light.

we walked around the area which was full of great spots like the railroad tracks, industrial buildings, graffiti walls and then a cute little residential area. the photo walks are cool finding new places to shoot and we scored with so many places to shoot within just blocks.

liza and matt are getting married next month at the wellspring renewal center up north of san francisco... they have a great weekend wedding planned for their family and friends which should be lots of fun. i'm glad we had this opportunity to shoot and hangout before their big day. thanks for a fun afternoon!

i know when you're planning your wedding there's so many places to look on the internet for ideas and inspiration. i found janie's blog bride's cafe full of ideas and beautiful images with lots of styles.

if you want to make your wedding a little more "green" and cut down on waste check out her "lite-green wedding tips" post. there's some great and easy ideas!

we used some recycled items at our wedding... saved old tin cans for flowers, saved mason jars for candles, reused scraps of paper from the invites for favors and drift wood for signs. afterwards i posted most of the stuff on craigslist to be re-used. there's lots of ways to be creative so have fun with it!

i stumbled onto this cool cable station called ovation tv. they're running a bunch of programs photography related this week that caught my eye. besides the photography program line-up they have some amazing films and cool artsy content. check it out. i've tivo'd a bunch of programs already. i don't know how long this channel has been aroud but glad i found it.

last night i watched part of "the genuis of photography: paper movies" which showcased the work of william klein. i love looking at his work and watching his interviews... great street photography.

"what color did for photography was what the electric guitar did for bob dylan"

plus they'll be airing "visions of light". the first time i saw this documentary was in film school and loved it! the documentary showcases the art and history of cinematography and the role of the cinematographer. definitely worth watching!
